My Experience with Short Hair

Happy New Year everyone!  I’m excited for this new year of blogging, and I hope you join me as I hope to only improve!

Today’s post is something I want to share, because I know many women who struggle with the decision on cutting their hair.  I am simply going to share my story and my experiences with my newest hairstyle, and hopefully I could give someone struggling with the decision, a new light on the subject!

I have had long hair all my life.  My mother always loved my hair and never allowed me to cut it.  I myself did love my hair long and down as well.  When I was in grade school I do remember wanting short hair, and that my mother would not let me at all!  After a while, though, I accepted my long hair and kept it that way for many years to come.

When I was younger, as I like to refer to it as “the cringe years”, I would put my long hair up in ponytails all day everyday.  Looking back now, I hate ponytails with a fiery passion!  I hated having my hair in my face, and I did grow out my bangs when I was younger too.  I still to this day hate having bangs, and I have never had them since.  My experience with long hair got better as I grew older, when I stopped wearing ponytails and began curling my hair and having it down all the time.  Though to me in the recent years,  I grew extremely bored with my hair, and I wanted a change.

The decision to cut my hair came when I was watching one of my favorite Julie Christie movies (my absolute favorite actress) which was Shampoo (1975).  I decided to get the same hairstyle that Julie Christie’s character had in the film, which was a bobbed style that is shorter in the back and longer in the front, and so I did!  My hairdresser was very shocked with my decision on the cut, I must say, but my NYC vacation was quickly approaching and I wanted a change.  I cut of about four inches of my hair, and here was the result!

Here is a before and after!

And here is what I styled my hair after!

Although my mother at first despised the haircut,  I myself fell madly in love with it!  It was so much easier to wash my hair and keep it healthier, and it was truly no longer in my way while working!  My NYC photos make me so happy to see my new hair in every picture, I was so happy!

I am probably going to keep my hair short for a long time, I can’t imagine going back to long hair again! I struggled with the decision on cutting my hair for so many years, and now after trying it,  I am so glad I did!  I f you want to cut your hair shorter, I suggest to take the plunge and try it!  Having a new hairstyle is honestly so refreshing and fulfilling, and hopefully you’ll love it as much as I do!

Are you thinking about cutting your hair? Let me know in the comments or tweet me @candidlydarling I would love to know!

  1. Amazing blog! I remember it was hard for me to cut my hair short since so much of my identity was grounded in it. I’m so glad I did though! ( It’s way easier to wash haha).
It’d be awesome if you could check out my blog and share if you like ?
